Getting Started with Crochet

To get started, you'll need just a few basic supplies to get up and running and ready to make your first item. Here's a list of what to buy:

  1. Yarn: Choose a medium weight yarn such as DK (Double Knit). Acrylic yarn is great for beginners because it's affordable and easy to work with. There are good and bad brands. I recommend starting with a plain light coloured yarn so that you can see your stitches well.

  2. Crochet Hook: For beginners, a 4mm hook is a good size to start with, which is often used for DK. You can experiment with different sizes as you get more comfortable. A larger hook will give a looser and more lacy look.

  3. Scissors: You'll need scissors obviously to cut the yarn when you’ve finished. I recommend a small pair of embroidery scissors.

  4. Tapestry Needle: This is used for weaving in yarn ends after you finish your project.

  5. Stitch Markers: These can be helpful for marking the beginning of rounds or keeping track of stitch counts.

  6. Measuring Tape: Useful for checking the size of your project, especially if you're following a pattern that requires specific dimensions. Often patterns will include a measurement of stitches that make up the garment. Don’t worry about this to start with but good to have this in your kit.

  7. Pattern: Many people start with granny squares because they are quick and simple, so you have something straight away. When you make multiple granny squares they can be sewn together to make many things including cushions, blankets, cardigans, scarves and more!

That’s all you really need to get started! Once you're more comfortable with crochet, you can start experimenting with different yarns, hooks, and accessories. Happy crocheting!
